Westcon CARES 2010 - Care - Support - Compassion
We launched the Westcon Cares initiative in August '07 and have made a difference in the lives of the under privilege of South Africa.
With the world economy in turmoil and cost of living rising every day, our stress levels have reached a new high, but even so it is important not to forget about the needy. Therefore we have selected one worthy cause for 2010 and we will be hosting various campaigns, competitions during 2010 to raise funds.
We at Westcon Cares have adopted Bethesda House as worthy cause for 2010 and want to invite you, your family, friends and company to join us in making a difference in these children's lives.
Bethesda House was officially opened on the 29th August 1993. It is a home to abandoned children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. It provides social, spiritual, psychological, emotional and intellectual support and care. The House encourages independent participation in different skills and extra mural activities to help develop them holistically. The ultimate goal is to integrate the children into the community through host parenting programmes that lead to foster parenting or adoption. The house can accommodate 36 children, boys and girls and is situated in the Carl Sithole Centre in Soweto.|

Past projects undertaken are:
1. DON BOSCO SCHOOL/ORPHANAGE PROJECT
Westcon staff, through the Westcon Cares initiative, undertook to raise funds to ease the plight of the children at the Don Bosco School.
Westcon staff divided into teams which on specific days sold various foods such as:
- Briyani (Logistics department)
- Hot dogs (Marketing department)
- Savoury lunch (Key Accounts department)
- DVDs (Sales department)
- Boerewors rolls (Accounts department)
- Throw-A-Pie-At-The-IT-Guy (I.T department)
On the 18th of September the Westcon staff went to visit the School and donate food stuffs such as rice, maize meal, cooking oil and toiletries.
Don Bosco School is situated in Lenasia extension, in the South of Johannesburg. It is run by two nuns who have dedicated their lives to educating and caring for orphans and vulnerable children. The children catered for range from two and half years old to seventeen years of age. Don Bosco facilities include a nursery school, a soup kitchen for the children and a primary school. The staff are all volunteers who live off stipends and donations from the church and general public. 70% of the children are orphans and the other students are unable to pay any school fees hence can not attend conventional school. The nuns who head Don Bosco School are not supported or funded by the government as they do not follow the proper school system. They also do not qualify for grants as their students are not housed by the school. Hence Don Bosco faced a great dilemma which we at Westcon eased with the provision of basic food stuffs, money and heaps of love!
2. PAUL JUNGNICKEL HOME FOR THE DISABLED PROJECT
In April 2008 Westcon SA hosted an online auction of various products at reduced prices. The money raised was donated to the Paul Jungnickel Home for disabled adults. Paul Jungnickel home, situated in Pretoria, has been open for over 20 years and is home to approximately 138 people.
3. SPCA BOOYSENS PROJECT
In April 2008 the Westcon SA employees had a 'White Elephant' Sale where individuals brought in any items, be it clothing, kitchen accesories, books etc that they no longer needed. The items were sold amongst the staff and the money raised was donated to the SPCA to assist with maintianing their premises.

4. The BEE Skills Transfer Project
The BEE Skills transfer project is aimed at BEE SME’s, Westcon SA have been offering pre-selected resellers two free seats on the Introduction to Networking Basics (Level 1) training course. The main aim is to ensure that skills gained will assist the BEE SME’s in building services based income streams by offering advanced network consulting, analysis and blue-printing services to customers, while helping to develop relationships in new, potentially viable, market sectors.
5. Adopt-a-School Project
Westcon SA have identified two schools which will be adopted with the guidance and support from the Adopt-a-School Foundation. The schools are situated in Krugersdorp, Gauteng and the other one is in Mpumalanga.
Adopt-a-School Foundation was established during 2001 by Cyril Ramaphosa, James Motlatsi and a group of other concerned South Africans. The principal aim of the Foundation is to encourage and mobilise individuals and companies to adopt schools. The main focus of the project is to make sure that schools have basic facilities so that good quality learning and teaching can take place.
To give effect to these objectives the Adopt-a-School Foundation was formed as a Section 21 non-profit making entity (Registration Number 2002/029810/08).
Due diligence have been conducted pertaining to the two schools needs and the Westcon Cares team are in the process of obtaining quotes and finalising various issues. The aim is to complete phase one of this project in the next two months.

We managed to bring hope to life for a few children this Christmas!
A few months ago we started to collect new and old toys for the children at Cotlands and received contributions from some of our staff, customers and suppliers.
A big thank you needs to go to the likes of Choice, November 1 and all the Westcon staff and their families for investing in our country's future. The toys were officially handed over to the Cotlands team on 14 December '06, by Jacques Malherbe, CEO,
Westcon SA.
We at Westcon SA are committed to investing in our country's future and will be launching the Westcon Cares initiative in the near future, which will address specific needs in our community.
